28 Three Point Attempts...Again
If I were coaching this Missouri team, I wouldn't allow a three point attempt for at least 2 or 3 games. They treat the three point attempt like a security blanket, fleeing to it when the zone gets all mean and scary. I got done coaching an indoor soccer game today and walked over to the concession area just in time to see the following: 9 minutes + on Missouri's scoring drought followed by a wild three point attempt by Jason Horton from NBA range moving to his left with a hand in his face and a bunch of time left on the clock. YMCA ball never looked so bad.

SMS Artifically Creates Prestige Through Name Change
SMS figured out that a shortcut around silly things like academic accomplishment is to change the name of the school. It looks like SMS is on its way to becoming Missouri State University despite not having anything close to equal footing with Mizzou in the Missouri public university system. On the outside, however, it appears that SMS has suddenly become important. In other news, call me Sir Iam4Mizzou III from now on.

1973 Hostage Crisis Explains Renewed Surge of Support
In 1973, victims of a kidnapping in Stockholm, Sweden eventually became sympathetic to their captors, even refusing to testify against them in court. Known as the Stockholm Syndrome, victims view their captors as god-like and feel a strong sense of loyalty and gratitude when they aren't injured.
With Mizzou riding a three game winning streak, many are smugly trumpeting the accomplishments of Snyder, somehow forgetting the big picture.

Resources on Beating the Zone for Quin

Dear Quin:
I've taken the liberty of compiling some helpful resources on breaking the zone defense. Thanks.

Mizzou Defeats Nebraska, Goes a Perfect 14-0
It's old news, but this cheered me up:
14-0! 11 meg quicktime file.
Impatience...Again
After listening to part of the first half and having left the game with Mizzou up, I expected the usual second half let down. I wasn't let down. I picked the game up again with about 8 minutes to go and we trailed by 10 or so. Per the script, the usual game plan of throwing up three after three after three when down a few possessions was in full effect. If Quin were a football coach, he would go for two after every touchdown. If he were a baseball coach, he would suicide squeeze every time he had a runner on third. It's what you do when you have no patience. You take shortcuts. You recruit Ricky Clemons and certain other shady characters. You play fast and loose with the rules. You try to make up 10 point deficits in 3 plays. And it's a shame, Quin has a nice set of players. He's purged the creeps and has the talent to run with just about any team, but if their game plan is to toss up three pointers for 12 minute stretches of the second half, then they've lost before the game ever started.

Mizzou Needs New Leadership

Friday, Mike Alden, Inc. put the word out to reporters that under no circumstances will Quin Snyder be fired this season. He will be back next year, "100%". I guess I'm not surprised. This is the same Mike Alden who picked the unproven young coach, so it will be tough to admit he was wrong.
Mike has a long history of defiance. He thumbed his nose at fan outrage over the snubbing of Norm Stewart when the Laurie family donated money for the new arena. He shrugged his shoulders when Quin Snyder committed major rules infractions, resulting in Mizzou going on probation. He gave Quin a contract extension despite Quin's long history of recruiting busts, underachieving teams, mind boggling losses to scrub teams and near complete futility against any quality opponent. In short, Quin Snyder would be fired for his indiscretions and poor performance in any job other than as Missouri's head basketball coach. Yet Mike stands firmly behind him.
So what would get Quin Snyder fired? Keep in mind, Quin has done absolutely nothing to indicate he's even capable of building a quality program. It's not like he did it somewhere else, then came to Mizzou and we just need to give him more time. This is his first job and what does he have to show for it? Primarily probation and national embarrassment. So to answer my question, I honestly don't know. I've lost complete confidence in Mike Alden as a leader of our athletic department. He has shown poor judgment in tough times, standing behind the source of problems instead of ridding it. I take no comfort thinking that perhaps the board of curators will swoop in to the rescue. These are the same beanheads that spent all of five minutes questioning Elson Floyd about Crackergate before declaring the issue closed. I can only hope that Governor Blunt is a Tiger fan.

My Nephew the College Football Player

Congratulations to my nephew, Andy Lozano, on signing with
SEMO this week. Andy gets the rare chance to play college sports and get a free education to boot. At 6'3" 270, Andy was a tweener, just a bit undersized for most D-1 schools and enormous for a 1AA school. After considering an offer from Ball State and some other schools, Andy selected SEMO where he will get coached by an offensive line coach who has helped 2 players make it to the NFL recently. Andy has already experienced something that's never happened to me: get recruited to do something. Anything at all.
The Rest of the Way Out
If Mizzou is to have any chance at righting the ship this season, it will have to start with Jason Horton. Horton has shown both flashes of skill and bucket loads of slop. Horton needs to understand that the other four guys on the court are depending on him to protect the ball and create high percentage scoring opportunities. Horton can't allow himself to just be another player out there. If there will ever be motion in Quin Snyder's offense, it will be because Jason Horton grasps the concept that he can rarely turn the ball over and that every drive, pass and cut is designed to create those easy scoring chances.

"And now they're stuck. It felt good."
"I am going to Missouri, there's no doubt about that," Daniel said Tuesday. "I was sort of happy when Texas called because it gave me a chance to turn them down. And now they're stuck. It felt good."--Chase Daniel on signing with Mizzou
Welcome to Mizzou, Chase. You've learned an important lesson: Texas sucks. Not the entire state, just the part where people think the Big XII begins and ends in Austin.
