Friday, Mike Alden, Inc. put the word out to reporters that under no circumstances will Quin Snyder be fired this season. He will be back next year, "100%". I guess I'm not surprised. This is the same Mike Alden who picked the unproven young coach, so it will be tough to admit he was wrong.
Mike has a long history of defiance. He thumbed his nose at fan outrage over the snubbing of Norm Stewart when the Laurie family donated money for the new arena. He shrugged his shoulders when Quin Snyder committed major rules infractions, resulting in Mizzou going on probation. He gave Quin a contract extension despite Quin's long history of recruiting busts, underachieving teams, mind boggling losses to scrub teams and near complete futility against any quality opponent. In short, Quin Snyder would be fired for his indiscretions and poor performance in any job other than as Missouri's head basketball coach. Yet Mike stands firmly behind him.
So what would get Quin Snyder fired? Keep in mind, Quin has done absolutely nothing to indicate he's even capable of building a quality program. It's not like he did it somewhere else, then came to Mizzou and we just need to give him more time. This is his first job and what does he have to show for it? Primarily probation and national embarrassment. So to answer my question, I honestly don't know. I've lost complete confidence in Mike Alden as a leader of our athletic department. He has shown poor judgment in tough times, standing behind the source of problems instead of ridding it. I take no comfort thinking that perhaps the board of curators will swoop in to the rescue. These are the same beanheads that spent all of five minutes questioning Elson Floyd about Crackergate before declaring the issue closed. I can only hope that Governor Blunt is a Tiger fan.
